In the Steep

anxiety
enters
a crux
so sheer
and sure,
it can
finally fade
and
fall.

In the steep
the stomach knot
Untangles.

In the steep,
the stomach knot
Untangles

into
a
vertical
line
where light is.

In the Steep is an extension of the panoramic work I’ve been engaged with over the last three years. I thought it would be interesting to turn the traditional panorama format on its head, attempting to make vertically formatted images along climbing and mountaineering routes found in the Indian Peaks Wilderness and Rocky Mountain National Park.

Compositionally and structurally, these were very hard images to make, and only a handful of the hundreds taken were successful. But the ones that work are kind of thrilling, because they relay that airy verticality in a visceral way. While these are the kinds of spaces that make some folks feel queasy, they are my sanctuary and refuge, where I feel perhaps the most focused and grounded.
